Doulton water filters are made in England by the same company that makes British Berkefeld® and Big Berkey® water filters. The Doulton SS is identical to the Big Berkey® (when equipped with Super Sterasyl elements) and the British Berkefeld® SS, except that it's configured to hold only 2 elements instead of 4.
Filter Elements
In 19th Century England, the River Thames was London's main water supply ... and sewer. Henry Doulton discovered that filtering water through a porous ceramic could stop people becoming sick from cholera and other water-borne diseases. This was a revolution in water treatment.
Fast forward 175 years and the ceramic filtration technology has advanced a long way, but the principles of our ceramic filters remain the same -- providing safe, healthy, great-tasting drinking water wherever and whenever you need it. From a mud hut in Uganda to an office block in Utah, Doulton filters are working round-the-clock to provide millions of people with water they can enjoy and trust.
A gravity filter enables you to have clean filtered drinking water on tap. Water is poured manually into the upper chamber. It passes through the filter elements under pressure of gravity into the lower chamber where the filtered water can be accessed via a tap on the front of the filter.
Made from high grade polished stainless steel, the Doulton SS Gravity Filter is a portable, robust model, which is easy to keep hygienically clean. The Doulton SS is very popular with aid organizations and private customers alike.
At the heart of the Doulton SS is the Super Sterasyl ceramic & activated carbon element. The ceramic is impregnated with silver, which inhibits the growth of bacteria, to make it self-sterilizing. Super Sterasyl ceramics have a tightly controlled complex pore structure, which has unparalleled filtration properties. With its absolute filtration rating of 0.9 microns, Super Sterasyl is highly effective against particulate contamination, pathogenic bacteria, cysts etc. The activated carbon core is very effective at removing chlorine and organics (pesticides, organic chemicals, tastes & odors, etc.) from water.
Super Sterasyl elements have an absolute pore size of 0.9 micron. Independent testing confirms they remove >99.99% of e.coli, cholera, shigella, typhoid, klebsiella terrigena, cryptosporidium, giardia, and other pathogens. (If you live in California or Iowa, see note at bottom of page.)
Manufactured in England under ISO conditions to ensure product consistency and reliability, Doulton filters regularly undergo rigorous testing by independent laboratories to ensure that our customers receive first class products every time. Independent quality control approvals such as the NSF International standard 42 and 53, and WRAS approval ensures that product performance claims are verified to the highest level.
Flow rate: approx. 0.2 gallons per hour, per element, as long as the water level is kept above the top of the elements.

Doulton elements will work fine in all other gravity filters that use similar elements, like AquaRain, Katadyn TRK Drip Filter, etc.

A few words about element length: The Super Sterasyl elements we sell are 7" long. Some sellers push 10" elements, claiming a higher flow rate; that's true, but only until the water level drops below the top of the elements, which happens pretty fast. So unless you're going to top off the filter every 15-30 minutes, there's really no significant difference in flow rate. Additionally, 7" elements are much less likely to break if the unit is dropped or handled roughly with the elements installed. That said, if you really want 10" elements, we'll sell them to you, but they cost more and won't help you.

The A-2 element is designed to reduce fluorides in drinking water to below 0.5 ppm. They are constructed with materials which are FDA approved. Laboratory tests show a reduction in fluoride levels from 10 ppm F+ to below 0.2 ppm F+. The A-2 element has also been shown to reduce arsenic to less than 0.02 ppm from 0.12 ppm in the supply water. Total capacity for arsenic has not been determined.
The A-2 mounts in the lower chamber of a drip-type filter, and screws onto the threaded stem of the Super Sterasyl element, where the wingnut would otherwise go. They fit only Doulton/Berkefeld elements; they will not fit other brands because the threads are different. You need one A-2 for each Super Sterasyl element installed in the filter.
Doulton recommends replacement at 6 months or 300 gallons per element.

If you live in California or Iowa, then Doulton water filters don't remove anything, because your state government chooses not to accept data that work just fine everywhere else on the planet. But that's OK because, presumably, they've made laws that protect you from all the nasty stuff that might otherwise be in whatever water you might have to drink in an emergency. But I digress... So, yes, we can ship to you, but we make NO CLAIMS WHATSOEVER about what it will or won't remove from water after it crosses your state line.
